Autumn on the Ranch

Autumn is my favorite time of year, and it's just about as busy as spring and summer on the ranch. We've had out first two snowstorms and there's a crest of white on the mountaintops, reminding me that I'd better hurry up and get the outside chores done before the snowline moves south.

In two weeks I'll be shipping four kids to the sale. For those of you unfamiliar with this blog, I'm talking about my South African Boer Goat kids. Then I'll be able to get their pen cleaned out and readied for winter. The breeder does have already had their pen cleaned out, thanks to husband and the tractor. They're on grain and hay now, having completed their organic weed management jobs in various spots around the ranch.

Also in two weeks, Baxter Buck comes for an extended date with the girls. This is the first year I haven't had my own buck, since Billy has gone on to Goat Heaven, but my fellow goat herder a few miles north is willing to share the wealth.

That's about it for today. Going to do some writing and get ready to meet my 50% deadline for the next Idiot's Guide.

  1. Gosh, Karen, you’ve had TWO snowstorms already?? Man, that’s an early winter, isn’t it. Here in NM, the weather has been gorgeous and I’m thinking fall will be my favorite time of year. For example, it’s sunny, and 74 degrees at 12:45. Wonderful stuff with no humidity.

In my youth…I think I had one…I wanted a job as a Baxter Buck. Now, uh…not so much.

  3. I may have some kids for sale, myself! :) Just kidding...I think! Mine were driving me crazy earlier.

I can't even *imagine* getting snow this time of year. I bet it's beautiful, though. We (in NC)might possibly see a teeny bit...in February!

  4. It sounds gorgeous where you are, although I don't think I could go back to the snow. I live in Florida and it does get cold here (for a couple days any way, lol). I remember when I lived up north autumn was one of my favorite seasons as well - the crisp air, the bright colors, fresh crunchy apples, apple cider, pumpkins (*huge grin*).

  5. Autumn is my favorite time of the year too. I miss the snow also, being froim Michigan. Alas, I'll just have to somehow enjoy the 75 degree weather and sunny skies today. I'll endure somehow.

Enjoy your day. Goats huhn? Sounds like a children's book in the making.

  6. Hi Steve,

You're doing some serious book promoting. Good job! As for children's stories, no. Working on my WWII novel - second installment in the series.
